Labor Day at Wekiva Falls

The summer season is almost over, the kids have gone back to school, and before long the weather will start to get cooler.

We love this time of year because it means our annual Labor Day celebration is right around the corner. It’s our last big hurrah before the summer season takes its curtain call. A relaxing weekend filled with grilling delicious food, throwing a fishing line off our marina, a few nights of camping under the starts — and most importantly: hanging out with family and friends.

Here at Wekiva Falls, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time for camping.
You have a three day weekend, mom and dad don’t have to rush the kids off to school and hopefully the offices are closed so there’s no work either.
The whole family has the time for a quick getaway. We think three days is the perfect stretch of time to get away from home and set up at a local campground.

Summer road trips are great and all, but once you add up the hotel, travel, gas, and entertainment an easy weekend away can become a costly affair! Why not spend it outside? Early September brings a welcome and refreshing drop in temperature and humidity plus why travel and have to make all the plans? It’s called “Labor Day” for a reason. We celebrate the hard working American people. So go ahead and splurge with a weekend of camping!

From the comfort of your rig or tent, you’ll be able to do all of the classic Labor Day activities: firing up the grill, catching some fresh fish for dinner, and enjoying a cold drink or two. We have a full roster of activities planned too!

The coastal beaches are beautiful but take a trip inland and you’ll discover the cool, refreshing Florida springs without the big crowd of summer campers! The 70-degree fresh water is sure to be refreshing!

Are you the adventurous type who can’t wait to get outdoors and hike? Or is your perfect Labor Day weekend as simple as stretching out in a hammock between two trees with a book and a cocktail?

Do you want a resort-style vacation complete with a waterfall, pool, twin slides, a recreation hall, and a calendar of exciting activities? Or are you much happier getting off the grid for a while, getting away from reality, and boondocking in some remote, wild corner?

Wekiva Falls can satisfy all these needs and much more.

Whether you come for the day or for the weekend, we’re sure you’ll agree that Wekiva Falls is the best campground around.

Keep in mind, you only have three days for your Labor Day weekend getaway so plan ahead! Give us a call or book your stay right here on our website.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Happy Labor Day!

Cast A Line Off Our Docks

For many people, camping and fishing go hand in hand. Wekiva Falls features one of the richest freshwater fishing locations in central Florida. For most, fishing gear is one of the first things that get packed for a camping trip.

If you’ve never been fishing before, you may be intimidated and hesitate to cast your own line out into the Wekiva River. Luckily, it’s much easier than you may think. Fishing is a great way to add excitement to your camping trip, a great way to get the kids off their electronic devices and out into the fresh air. On top of that, fishing can be a great way to relax and spend some quality alone time to reflect.

However, if you happen to be starting from scratch and want to add fishing to your next camping trip, you will need some very basic (and cheap) gear. There are plenty of different models and types of fishing reels and rods, but the best place to start for a beginner is a simple spin cast reel. A spin cast reel is by far the easiest to learn how to use and the most novice-friendly type of fishing reel. You just press and hold down the button, cast the pole towards the water, release the button once your bait hits the water, then wait! There is virtually no risk of a messy tangle in your line

If you’re bringing a few younger campers to fish alongside you, spin cast reels also come in kid-friendly sizes. The reduced size makes it much easier for smaller hands.

Alongside your new rod and reel, you’ll also need a basic tackle. Tackle is the word fishermen use to refer to all the gear necessary to go fishing. Items like hooks, sinkers, and bobbers should be in your tackle box. You won’t need much to get started, so don’t be surprised if you come away spending far less than you expected.

The most basic setup (and the most recommended) for beginners is a standard bobber rig. A bobber rig is a small plastic float attached above the hook on your fishing line that keeps your bait in eye line of fish near the surface of the water. This setup is perfect for beginners. As soon as a fish tugs on your line, the bobber will bounce and duck under the surface of the water. This is your cue to try and pull your catch in before it can wriggle off the hook.

The last piece of advice that we will leave you with is to be patient, relax, enjoy the outdoors, and have fun out there. Fishing isn’t about catching the most fish or even the biggest fish. Fishing is all about enjoying the great outdoors, taking in nature, and having fun with your friends and family. Expect to get your line tangled once or twice or get your hook caught in some underwater driftwood, or run out of bait. But also expect to experience the rush of catching a few fish and have a lot of fun! You may discover a new lifelong hobby that you can enjoy for the rest of your life.

Dive in, the Water’s Fine!

Wekiva Falls is actually a natural sulfur spring that is capped, channeling the water up through a conduit that “falls” into a beautiful lagoon for swimming. On one end, it has a sandy beach and on the other, the water runs out the lagoon onto a sandy-bottomed stream to the nearby Wekiva River.

The lagoon is wrapped by a man-made apron where guests can spread blankets, pitch canopies and stretch out on beach chairs. On top of all that, there’s a 360-degree water slide in the spring-pool for the whole family.

Along the ridge atop the spring-pool are shady pavilions with picnic tables and benches, well used by day guests, especially during the hot summer months.

A favorite attraction at Wekiva Falls is easy access to the Wekiva River, one of Florida’s best-protected waterways. The river is fed by multiple springs, flowing downstream to the north-flowing St. John’s River. There’s even a grassy launch area for kayaks and canoes about 200 yards from the river.

It’s a peaceful river. The flow is slow enough to allow you to paddle upstream (turn right) for miles into the beautiful, sub-tropical Wekiva River Aquatic Preserve, then float back.

Downstream is equally scenic (and shady), but the return paddle against the currents can be tiring, so you might consider arranging for a shuttle if you plan to go far. Either way, you are in for a glorious day on the water.

Soak in our mineral-rich hot spring. These waters offer a host of natural health benefits you may not know about. The relaxation powers of the hot springs have been used for thousands of years and are widely accepted in Europe and Japan as a natural treatment for stress. The therapeutic use of water, or balneotherapy, could be just what the doctor ordered.

The water found in natural hot springs contains a variety of different minerals, including calcium and sodium bicarbonate. When you bathe in a hot spring, your skin soaks in these minerals.

Stress relief doesn’t have to come in the form of a pill. Excess stress can be remedied naturally by immersing your body in a hot-spring water bath. The minerals in the water can contribute to the psychological healing process, while heat relaxes tense muscles. Improved sleep can be an added benefit; when you soak in warm water, your body temperature rises, then quickly cools down when your bath is complete. This body-cooling process can help you relax and fall into a deeper sleep.

Kayaking at Wekiva Falls

Few activities give the outdoor enthusiast such a varied array of experiences as kayaking. Whether you are seeking the heart-stopping exhilaration of a roller coaster or the serenity and peace of getting lost in the moment, you can find your passion in a kayak.

There are many different types of kayaking. While whitewater kayaking involves navigating swift moving rivers, the waters at Wekiva Falls are considered Flatwater, kayaking that takes place in large bodies of calm water that can include anything from a brief lazy day on the water to a long day kayaking on the ocean. Our guests love to fish from their kayaks too.

People from all walks of life are becoming addicted to flatwater kayaking at Wekiva Falls. Some are die-hard kayakers while others thrive on a leisurely paddle along a quiet and secluded body of water. And others do it simply for the relaxation and light exercise.

Whatever your circumstance, one thing is certain. The indescribable feeling you get from stepping into a kayak, pushing away from land, dipping the kayak’s paddle into the water, and taking that first stroke! As you leave your cares, problems, and stresses on the banks and shores of your lives, you are floating, and you are free.
Kayaking is for anybody looking for an opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors. In addition to being a fun, easy, and enjoyable, kayaking is also a great low-impact workout.

And if you don’t own a kayak, don’t worry. You can rent a kayak at our marina, right here at Wekiva Falls.

1. Kayak because it’s fun
When it comes down to the essential reason why people kayak it all comes back to this one reason. Paddling a kayak is fun, relaxing, and easy to do.

2. Kayak to be close to nature
Kayaking in the middle of mother nature is better than most other activities. In many cases, you will be able to travel to and see sights only accessible by water.

3. Kayak to be with friends
Kayaking together builds relationships. Whether your friends and family share a competitive streak or just like to hang out, kayaking is a great time.

4. Kayak for exercise
There are few outdoor activities that offer a both light exercise and stress-relief. Kayaks will offer you this benefit regardless of the type you choose to paddle.

5. Kayak for adventure
You never know what you’ll see floating along Wekiva River. The wildlife, the beautiful trees and flowers, and many other sights.

6. Kayak to relax
There are few things more relaxing than sitting in a kayak and watching the sunset over a lake. Kayaking can offer stress relief like no other. Some would say, “Even a bad day of kayaking is better than a good day at work.”

7. Kayak to fish
Kayaking facilitates and enhances many other activities. There is no quieter way to access those hard to reach fishing holes than by drifting in a kayak.

8. Kayak to Stay Cool
Don’t let the summer heat get the best of you. Cruise up Wekiva River under the shade of trees and take in the cool breeze.

9. Kayak for exercise
Whether a person is just a few years old or upwards of 60, they can enjoy kayaking. Kayaking reaches across these generational lines and simply does not discriminate.

10. Kayak for a date
It’s an amazing romantic way to get away together. Kayaking is a great way to spend time with that special person in your life!

Soak up the Sun

During the summer, the hot spot is always somewhere near the water. It’s an incredibly relaxing place to be, and a good beach-side spot is like a mini vacation all on its own! Here are some reasons why guests love to soak in the sun at Wekiva Falls.

1. Being beach-side is the ultimate relaxation zone. When you pull up to the water, it’s only natural to want to unplug from the monotonous daily routine, rub on some suntan lotion, and let the stress melt away.

2. You’ll love the fresh air. Taking a moment to breathe in some fresh air will help clear your mind of any worries. Spending time outdoors is calming and boosts your mood.

3. Vitamin D. Sunshine is essential for our health and wellbeing. You can get our daily dose of Vitamin D directly through our skin by spending some time in the sun. Just make sure to rub on plenty of sunblock.

4. Sunshine relieves stress. Both the sun and the sound of water has an intoxicating effect on your body. Water has many therapeutic qualities so a short swim in our sparkling waters can relax your joints and your mind. The tranquil sound of the waves splashing gently against the shore can be extremely healing for your mind, body, and soul.

5. The beach gets us moving. We can spend some time exercising by taking a swim in the sea or a walk along the beach.

6. You will enjoy your surroundings. The views are so soothing and peaceful.

7. The natural spring is the best free “spa” in central Florida! Take full advantage of the sand’s rejuvenating qualities – sand is a natural exfoliate, that can remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling softer. Take a walk along the beach and feel the sand between your toes or gently rub some sand in circular motions on your skin. The sun is detoxifying – it opens up our pores, and the sea’s salty water pulls out toxins.

8. You can spend some time alone. Plug in your music or read a book you’ve been meaning to get to. Unplug from the world around you and enjoy some downtime

9. You will create amazing memories. You can spend time with loved ones, play on the beach, be silly and enjoy the sunshine. Be sure to take lots of photographs.

10. The beach at Wekiva Falls is the best escape! No matter what you’re feeling, a trip to Wekiva Falls will improve your mood.

Biking Through Wekiva Falls

Camping and biking go hand in hand, but not every campground makes it easy for guests to enjoy a bike ride. If you want to enjoy a full day of pedaling before roasting your s’mores, you will love Wekiva Falls. With a path that winds throughout the resort, you’ll want to get out for a leisurely ride every day.

Early in the morning or around sunset is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the fresh air. What’s more, bicycling has many health benefits— no need to be restricted to the gym to exercise. Bicycling engages your legs, but it’s also easy on your joints. Not to mention how biking reduces stress in the body and in the mind.

According to medical professionals, a relaxing bike ride burns more calories than a brisk walk. Sometimes up to 281 calories per hour! You can even challenge yourself by pedaling a little faster for short sprints before returning to a leisurely pace. It’s a great way to supplement your relaxing daylight exercise.

Whether you’re recovering from a light injury, looking for light activity, or need a way to get active without running on cement, cycling is the smart choice because it gets your legs moving and your heart pumping without pounding your joints. Running takes a toll on the body. Biking, on the other hand, is far lower impact and engages the muscles in the legs without as much force coming down on the knees. So long as you keep your legs pumping on your bike, it ends up being a much smoother, lower risk form of cardio, especially if you’re recovering from an injury.

Even if you’re in amazing shape now, even weightlifters want to get outside. One of the best things about bicycling is that it mixes things up so your gym time stays fresh. Many lifters lift for years and spend their weeks being too stiff or too sore to enjoy other activities. The great thing about biking is you can do it day after day for the rest of your life.

Biking is a great way to explore and really get to know the area around you better. Most never really get to know the area around us because we’re always in cars. Even if you run outdoors, we rarely mix up our routes so you’re not getting close to the range of exploration that you can experience on your bike. Even if you decide to bike in areas you usually drive by, you might be surprised by what you notice and appreciate being outside taking it all in.

Oh, and the kids love it. The moment a child learns to ride a bike is an exciting moment. Do you remember when biking was your means of freedom in those earlier years? There’s so much to see and do as you bike through the campground of Wekiva Falls- from the wildlife to the fun and freedom.

Take in the great outdoors like a kid again and enjoy a leisurely bike ride through Wekiva Falls.

Top Three RV Camping Tips

Unplugging from the world is the ultimate appeal for any camp enthusiast, or for someone looking to get away for the weekend. Before that can happen though, your phone will still come in handy to check out what RV campgrounds would be best.

Wekiva Falls RV Park is an excellent destination for campers to visit. There are plenty of amenities to enjoy at the Orlando RV Resort. But camp-goers always make the mistake and don’t correctly pack or plan for the trip. Here are a few tips you should consider before embarking on your getaway trip to Wekiva Falls.

Check the Weather
Even though Wekiva Falls’ Campground is open rain or shine, you should always check the weather. Some reports say, “The most important thing is staying warm and comfortable on your trip.” Multiple apps and sites allow you to look up the weather forecast in practically any location. Investing in quality equipment is also important in case of changes to the weather. It’s more important to be comfortable and safe, even if it means spending a few more bucks.

Travel With Less

Backpacking instructor Tom Lionvale’s best advice is to travel light. He states 20 pounds is the ideal weight when backpacking, not including food and water that may be needed. This also means needing to purchase less gear when RV camping. Be sure to check out seasonal sales! Outdoor equipment and gear tend to cost less around October since the peak camping season ends. Renting or borrowing is another viable option, especially if you are new to the RV camping lifestyle.

Make Your Own Rules

This is your trip, so have fun! Don’t spend money on unnecessary items, like a new camera or Apple Watch, unless you really want to! Budget your trip, pack the essentials, and be sure you are safe wherever you set up.
